KnowledgeCenters
KnowledgeCenters are learning centers that contain libraries, computer labs and space for children and community members to read, write, and educate themselves through expressive means of communication. These spaces for learning are either standalone buildings or individual rooms depending on the initial site assessment and community needs. We provide books, computers and other learning materials and run our localized programs such as environmental education, mentorship programs and community initiatives out of the centers.
Supplementing basic education is of extreme importance in Zambia given the difficulties the Government of Zambia has encountered in investing in education especially in rural areas such as Itezhi Tezhi. Primary schools in Itezhi Tezhi are in great need of resources as they are generally devoid of basic supplies, including books, computers and general reading and writing materials. Schools do not teach environmental education, yet natural resources are integral to the well-being of these rural communities; Children rarely have access to role models who can inspire them to be leaders; Communities are not mobilized to take action. KnowledgeBeat works with the Ministry of Education, the Zambian Wildlife Authority, local community members and other partners to provide materials and programs that bridge these gaps. The KnowledgeCenter program includes:
When a separate building is not available to be made into a KnowledgeCenter, KnowledgeBeat promotes mobile libraries that can be managed either within or outside a Classroom. Storybooks are provided and kept in a safe location until they are used during a Library Class. During Library Class the teacher brings the books into class and allows the students to read for that class period. Community members also have access to Knowledge Centers to participate in facilitator training, access to resources, and community development programs.
KnowledgeCenters Six Month Phased launch:
- The KnowledgeCenter Committee and volunteer staff is trained.
- Children and community members are introduced to the library and taught how to use, care for and check out books.
- A library card system is established and users are educated on KnowledgeCenter policies.
- KnowledgeCenter programs such as Environmental Education, Mentorship and Community Initiatives are introduced and launched.
KnowledgeCenters are currently running in Ngoma and Masasabi which have a total population of 650 students. During the next 5 years, KnowledgeBeat aims to Develop KnowledgeCenter’s in 10 additional sites throughout Itezhi Tezhi.
